Artist Statement

MESSAGE Absence = Presence

2020 年、人々は大切な人達にもた易く会いづらい状況を経験した。しばらくはこのような時が続くだろう。私たちは彼らの不在を思う。戸田は、大切な人へのメッセージを内包するためのカプセルを作った。書き手によってとどめられた言葉は、痕跡でもある。それらは貝によって封印されたり、木と木を繋ぎあわせ、また人と人を繋ぎとめる象徴ともなる＜かすがい＞をモチーフとした金の粒で留められる。ゲイリーは家族らが纏っていた古い衣服を集め<記憶>としての素材を作った。藍で染めてからすべてを完全に紐解直す。それらのパーツは再縫合され、不規則と調和は新しい一つのコンポジションを作りあげた。かつて糸の通されていた穴や、藍に染まらなかった隠れていた部分があらわになり、かつて身に纏っていた人物の痕跡が見えてくる。

In 2020, people all over experienced difficult times where they simply could not meet with their beloved ones. They felt their absence and sought traces of their presence through objects. As this period will continue for some time, the two artists, Yohko Toda and Anaïs Guery want to create pieces that connect people through time and space. Yohko creates a series of Japanese lacquered capsules containing a message letter. The handwritten words of the writer are also traces of that person. Each capsule is sealed by shell details and fastened with gold pieces with a "kasugai" motif, an element that usually connects wood to wood but here symbolizes the connection between people.
Anaïs creates ‘memento’ material with used garments taken here and there from her own family. Dyed with indigo and completely unstitched, these fragments are re-assembled as a new composite material, irregular yet harmonious, showing holes and un-dyed details standing for visible traces of their absent owners.

2000-05年: 東京藝術大学名誉教授大西長利に漆芸を師事
